Every Doula works differently and offers different types of services. You might find it challenging to find a doula that suits your needs if you have very set ideas. Your best bet is to start looking early. Most doulas offer a free consultation either over the phone, email or in person. It is a good idea to interview more than one doula. This will give you an idea of what is out there in terms of philosophy, personality and experience. I recommend that you start looking at around 5-7 months gestation. This will give you plenty of time to find a doula in your area and give you time to do prenatal workshops with her if she offers them. It also gives you plenty of time to build a rapport and establish a trusting relationship.

This year it was more evident than most what the cost of being a doula entails. The hardest part of being a doula is the on call time. You begin to officially be on call from the beginning of a client’s 38th week through her 42nd week. The being on call means your life revolves around being ready for the phone call that the mom to be needs you. It means that the theatre tickets, the concert, the party, all of those things are not prioritized over the mom in need.

Having a Doula is more popular now than ever before. Part mother’s assistant, part birthing coach, doulas are showing up in delivery rooms and quickly becoming an important part of the maternity healthcare team. Recent studies have shown that the use of a Doula results in improved physical outcomes and emotional well-being of a mother and her infant. JustMommies.com sat down with Cheryl K. Baker, Founder of Birth Partners. Cheryl is a twenty-nine year veteran of the labor room, a DONA certified Labor Doula, a Certified Bradley Educator and a Certified Lactation Educator from UCLA. She has been a birth attendant for hundreds of births and is going to fill us in on everything we need to know about Doulas…

Pregnant with her fourth child and facing a year in prison for dealing methamphetamine, Amanda Long was ready to change her behavior. For as long as she had been a mother, Long had been selling drugs, stealing cars and committing petty crimes. But when she arrived at the Washington Corrections Center for Women eight months pregnant, she wondered what would happen to her baby after he was born. Who could she turn to for advice about her pregnancy while she was behind bars? Long turned to a resource that pregnant women have relied on for centuries — doulas.
