Breastfeeding rates have increased in 21 countries, with Iran achieving the
highest average increase, followed by Brazil and Zambia. These countries
have instituted initiatives to publicize the benefits to mother and baby,
and to prohibit the advertising and promotion of breastmilk substitutes.
Information activities, the training of health service personnel and
promotion of government policies have all played a role.
Conversely, breastfeeding rates have declined in Colombia, Jordan, Kenya,
Kyrgystan, Morocco and Tunisia.
