I remember my midwife in Oklahoma telling me that our bodies will usually birth our babies, with or without our help. She called it either the "law of birth" or "rule of birth". This came into play when we were discussing in labor how I was so tired, my contractions had petered out, and I just wanted to sleep. (This was after almost 24 hours of labor). I had fully dilated, but had no urge to push. She said that because of the law or rule of birth, I could take a nap if I wanted, and when I woke up, my body would probably be birthing my baby.
I tried to look this up on the web, including wikipedia, but found nothing. Have any of you heard this term before?
(BTW, I did kind of doze between contractions, but never really took a nap. I ended up doing Vasalva pushing, and had her by about the 25 hour mark. That's one of the few things I regret about her birth. I wish I had just taken the nap. I think not doing that kind of pushing would have been easier on my bottom.) |

That sounds interesting and absolutely believable... I mean how did humans survive childbirth for thousands of years before we had doctors? Not long ago, I guess other women helped, but I've also heard that further back, women just did it alone - letting their bodies do as nature intended.
I couldn't find anything on that particular term either. But I'm sure interested in finding out more if anyone knows about this. _________________ WAHM passionate about non-toxic living and babywearing. I love Baby Carrier Wraps & Baby Carrier Slings |

That's one of my best tricks for moms who's labor has petered out. It also works well for the mom who's labor is not advancing despite lots of contractions. In the latter situation, I will give a mom a glass of wine and put her to bed. The wine will ease off the contractions and the mom can get some sleep.
I've never heard that term before, but I like it. _________________ "The truth shall set you free, but first it will make you mad."
